The Secret to Dating Better? Knowing Yourself
We spend a lot of time in dating thinking about who we are looking for. What do they look like? What do they do? What are their values? Will there be chemistry?
But there’s another question that can be just as important: how do I show up when I’m dating?
Understanding your own dating style can genuinely make you a better dater. It can help you recognise why you make certain decisions, what you tend to notice first, how quickly you become interested or lose interest, and whether you naturally race ahead, hold back or analyse everything in between.
None of those approaches are necessarily right or wrong. The important part is knowing your patterns, because once you can see them, you can start deciding whether they’re actually helping you.
That’s why we created the Compatico Dating Personality Quiz. It’s a fun quiz, not a psychological assessment, but it can be a really useful first step in understanding how you approach dating and what you might want to be more conscious of the next time you meet someone.
Understanding if you are you actually ready to date?
Being ready to date isn’t simply about deciding you want a relationship.
The Gottman Institute talks about relationship readiness as developing greater self-awareness, understanding your emotional patterns and triggers, knowing your values, and being able to take responsibility for how you respond in relationships. There isn’t a magic amount of time you need to be single before dating again. What matters more is understanding what you’re bringing with you into the next relationship.
Before focusing entirely on who you want to meet, it can be worth asking yourself:
· Am I open to getting to know someone, or am I looking for reasons to rule them out?
· Do I understand what genuinely matters to me in a relationship?
· Am I still comparing new people with someone from my past?
· Can I handle a little uncertainty, or do I need to know immediately whether someone is “the one”?
Am I looking for a real person, or for someone to fit a picture I’ve already created in my head?
You don’t need to have everything perfectly figured out before you date. But being aware of where you’re at can completely change how you approach it. And that’s where understanding your dating personality can help.
What your result can tell you
Your dating personality isn’t about putting you in a box. Think of it more as holding up a mirror. It can highlight some of the strengths you naturally bring to dating, while also showing you the areas where you might need to challenge yourself a little.
Maybe you need to slow down and make sure you’re getting to know the actual person rather than their potential. Maybe you need to stop expecting fireworks in the first hour and give attraction some room to grow. Maybe you tend to overanalyse every interaction, or perhaps you know exactly what you want but have become so specific that there’s very little room left for someone to surprise you.
Dating isn’t only about assessing the other person. You’re part of the equation too.
Becoming more aware of those tendencies gives you a chance to catch them before they start making every decision for you.
The six dating personalities
The Optimist sees possibility in every new connection. Warm, hopeful and open, they bring brilliant energy to dating, but sometimes need to stay grounded and make sure they’re falling for the person, not just their potential.
The Romantic still believes great love is out there. They value affection, emotional connection and meaningful gestures, while remembering that the best relationships don’t always begin with a movie-worthy spark. Often, they’re built through lots of ordinary moments that slowly become important.
The Slow Burner needs a little more time. Attraction might not arrive in the first ten minutes, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing there. Their challenge is not ruling out something promising simply because it hasn’t caught fire immediately.
The Overthinker is thoughtful and careful, but can end up analysing the text, the pause before the text, what was said on the date and what wasn’t. Their opportunity is learning to become a little more comfortable with uncertainty and remembering that you’re not supposed to know everything after one date.
The Adventurer dates with curiosity and an open mind. They’re often happy to meet someone outside their usual “type” and give things a go. Their challenge is making sure that openness doesn’t mean losing sight of the values that genuinely matter.
The Intentional Dater knows what they want and doesn’t want to date simply for the sake of dating. That clarity is a strength, as long as there’s still enough room for surprise and preferences don’t quietly become a list of unnecessary dealbreakers.
Know yourself, then get curious about someone else
Your dating personality isn’t fixed. Most of us will see parts of ourselves in more than one type, and the way we date can change enormously depending on our experiences and the stage of life we are in.
The real value is simply becoming more conscious of it.
The Gottman approach to relationships places a huge amount of importance on knowing both yourself and your partner. One of its core relationship concepts, “Love Maps”, is about developing a real understanding of another person’s inner world. But before we can get genuinely curious about someone else, it helps to understand our own and really think about where we are at on the dating timeline.
Whether you are just starting on your dating journey, or you have been on a few dates and are beginning to find your confidence and feet in dating again, understanding how you show up is a great place to start.
A few simple things to keep in mind:
Stay curious. Try not to make every date about deciding yes or no straight away. Give yourself the chance to actually learn who the person is.
Notice your patterns. Pay attention to whether you tend to overthink, rush ahead, hold back or rule people out quickly.
Know what matters. Be clear on your values and what you genuinely need in a relationship, while leaving some room for someone to surprise you.
The more you understand yourself, the easier it becomes to date with confidence, curiosity and intention.
