Matchmaking vs Events: You never know where a connection might begin
Some connections are carefully considered. Others happen when you least expect them. At Compatico, we believe there’s room for both.
One of the things we love is that there's no single formula for bringing two people together. It might be two people who, after plenty of thought and consideration from our matchmakers, are introduced because we see real potential between them.
Or it could be two people who happen to sit next to each other at an event, strike up a conversation and discover something neither of them expected. Both are wonderful ways to meet someone. We wanted to share a little more about why we do both, how they work differently and why being open to each can make such a difference to your dating experience.
The thought behind a match
There’s a lot happening behind the scenes before an introduction lands in your inbox. Our matchmakers get to know members beyond what’s written in their profiles: values, lifestyle, relationship history, what matters to them and everyday compatibility. It’s not simply about matching two people because they’re a similar age and both enjoy walking on the beach.
Our matchmakers do all the legwork, and we love those moments when a new member joins and we think, aha! We have just the person for you in our membership! It's exciting for the person who's just joined, but equally exciting for someone who may have been a member for a while, waiting for the right introduction.
Our matchmaking decisions are entirely human, which means there's a lot of thought behind every match. So, hey, why not trust your matchmaker and go on that date?
Here's a small thought that might improve your matchmaking experience. When an introduction comes through, are you looking for reasons to say yes or reasons to say no? Of course, your values, boundaries and genuine dealbreakers matter. But if the hesitation is simply that they're not quite the person you pictured, consider having that coffee. Your matchmaker has seen potential worth exploring, and one conversation can tell you far more than a written profile.
Remember, matchmaking is very different from a dating app. Don't be so quick to swipe left on an introduction. This is matchmaking, not Tinder! And there's probably a reason you left the dating apps behind in the first place.
Then there’s the magic of being in the room
Events give us the chance to bring people together in a completely different way. Unlike matchmaking, where we carefully consider compatibility, our events are much simpler. We bring people together based on age and gender, and then leave room for the unexpected. You might find yourself chatting to someone we would never have introduced you to through matchmaking, but in person, something just clicks. That's the beauty of meeting people in real life. You can't always predict chemistry on paper, and some of the most surprising connections turn out to be the best ones.
At our member-only events, there's also that added reassurance that everyone has been through the same membership process as you. They've been interviewed, had their photos checked and completed the Ministry of Justice criminal record check required by Compatico. While no screening process can eliminate every risk, there's something comforting about knowing everyone has taken those same steps. So why not lean in, take a chance and see who you might meet?
A pub quiz, a shared cab and a connection nobody saw coming
Late last year, we trialled a few community pub quiz nights in Auckland. They were a bit of an experiment: get people together, have some fun and see what happened. Recently, we heard from a couple who met at one of those evenings. More than a year later, they're still choosing each other.
“A spontaneous decision to share a cab in the same direction following a community event sparked a connection we didn’t see coming! We lead complex lives, but more than a year on, we are still choosing each other. We’re so grateful for the night we met.”
How lovely is that? No planned introduction, just a pub quiz and a shared cab home. Our community events aren't curated or considered by the matchmaking team in the way our one-to-one introductions are. This connection was a lovely twist of fate, made possible by two people making the effort to get out and meet other singles. It's exactly why we love creating these experiences. You never quite know what might come of one evening out.
Could an event be the confidence boost you need?
We know dating can feel daunting, especially if it’s been years since your last first date or you’ve had a run of disappointing experiences. Perhaps you’ve found yourself saying no to introductions, not because the person is wrong for you, but because putting yourself out there again feels like hard work.
An event can be a great way to ease back in. At our Mixers, matchmakers facilitate the speed dating, so there’s no pressure to come up with a clever opening line or figure out who to approach. Or try a Table of Six, where you can settle into a relaxed dinner and let conversation unfold. You don’t need to meet your future partner that night. A good laugh, a new friend or a little more confidence is worthwhile too.
Sometimes we need to give connection a little more time
Relationship researcher Dr John Gottman talks about “turning towards” one another: responding to the small, everyday attempts people make to connect. His work is a reminder that trust and closeness grow through attention, interest and the way we respond to each other over time.
There’s something useful in that for dating. Rather than judging everything on an instant spark, notice whether someone listens, asks thoughtful questions and makes you feel comfortable being yourself. Those things might not jump off a profile, or even reveal themselves in the first five minutes. A little curiosity and a good conversation can be reason enough to meet again. Try approaching each date with a mindset of finding reasons to say yes, rather than reasons to say no.
The next opportunity starts with you
Matchmaking gives you a thoughtfully considered introduction. Events create room for the unexpected and help you build confidence along the way. Neither guarantees romance, but both open doors that might otherwise have remained closed.
Our matchmakers can consider the introductions, and our events team can bring people together. But there’s one thing we can’t do for you: say yes on your behalf. So the next time an introduction arrives or an event catches your eye, consider leaning in.
After all, you never know who you might end up sharing a cab with.
