Event Review: Summer Singles’ Mixer

Wednesday night was one for the books, and if you were there, you already know why.

Our Summer Singles Mixer at a cosy bar in Grey Lynn delivered everything we love about a great Compatico event: good people, good vibes, and the kind of genuine connections and face-to-face mixing that remind you why you chose matchmaking over swiping.

The Setting

The outdoor garden area was the perfect spot for a summer evening mixer. Relaxed, unpretentious, and just the right size for 28 singles to move around and mingle comfortably.

14 men. 14 women. A perfect 28-person split.

Compatico is the only matchmaking agency in New Zealand achieving this kind of gender balance at our events, and it makes a real difference. We put a lot of effort into curating the group to achieve this mix, and it does mean that all events have a waitlist.

Ding Ding Ding! Speed Dating Round

We kicked off the first 30 mins with speed dating. With our earlier Compatico events, we shied away from traditional speed dating, but we found that it does mean everyone gets a chance to speak to everyone. Plus, nobody has to navigate the awkwardness of exiting conversations, the bell does that for you. After a well-earned drinks break, we moved into a slightly more free-form activity encouraging people to mingle further. This format works well because most people had already spotted a face or two they were keen to know better.

Then: The Compatico Mixer

After the speed dating buzz, we moved into our signature Compatico-style mixer. More relaxed, more organic. Drinks in hand, conversations flowing freely, people gravitating naturally toward the ones they'd connected with earlier. This is where the real magic happens.

Every event we run, we actively listen to what our members tell us and make incremental improvements and adaptations each time. What worked, what they loved, what they'd change. This mixer felt different from our previous ones, and that's intentional. We keep evolving because our members keep talking to us, and we keep listening.
